Book Launch: Brian Bennett & Andrew Wilson (amended)
Next event of the Anglo-Belarusian Society will be a presentation of two newly published books, The Last Dictatorship in Europe: Belarus under Lukashenko by Brian Bennett (UK Ambassador to Belarus, 2004-2007) and Belarus: The Last European Dictatorship by Andrew Wilson (Reader in Ukrainian Studies, School of Slavonic and East European Studies, University College London).
The event will take place in London, at Marian House (corner of Holden Avenue and Holden Road, London N12 8HY, nearest tube station: Woodside Park) on Thursday 26 January, 7pm.
Admission free; a collection will be taken to cover expenses. Refreshments will be served.

Распачаўся продаж квіткоў на дзьве новыя пастаноўкі Беларускага вольнага тэатру (Free Belarus Theatre) ў Лёндане: шэксьпіраўскага “Караля Ліра” і “Мінск 2011″ Уладзіміра Шчэрбаня.
Шэксьпіраўская п’еса на беларускай мове будзе пастаўленая на сцэне славутага Shakespeares Globe у рамках міжнароднага фэстывалю, падчас якога цягам шасьці тыдняў 37 тэатраў з розных краінаў прадставяць свае інтэрпрэтацыі Бардаўскіх тэкстаў у перакладах на свае нацыянальныя мовы. Сайт Globe to Globe

Часопіс «Большой» адправіў Дзмітрыя Навіцкага на Міжнародны кангрэс даследчыкаў Беларусі, дзе ён і пазнаёміўся з прафeсарам рускай літаратуры Лонданскага ўнівeрсітэта Арнольдам Макмілінам. Сёння яны гутараць пра беларускую літаратуру.
― Арнольд, якія творы беларускай літаратуры вы можаце параіць з пазнакай “сусветны ўзровень”?
― Без аніякіх сумневаў, гэта «Мёртвым нe баліць» і «Сотнікаў» Васіля Быкава. Так, як ён раскрывае тэмы маралі і слабасці, не ўмее рабіць ніхто. Уладзімір Караткевіч «Хрыстос прызямліўся ў Гародні» ― геніяльны твор. З сучасных я б адзначыў Уладзіміра Арлова, Алeся Разанава і Андрэя Хадановіча. Вельмі добрая літаратура.

December 19th – One Year On – Artists call a state of emergency in Belarus
“We call upon the power of art to disturb the sleep of conscience” – The artists manifesto
Join us on December 19th to mark a year a since Lukashenko’s vicious crackdown on dissent and political opposition in Belarus. On this day a year ago around 50,000 Belarusians gathered peacefully to demonstrate against the unfair election. They were met with violent oppression.
Around 2,000 people were arrested and detained en masse in Minsk. There are still 16 political prisoners who are kept under appalling conditions and are routinely tortured. Two of these are presidential candidates Andrei Sannikov and Nicolai Statkevich.
We will gather outside the Belarusian Embassy (6 Kensington Court, Kensington London, W8 5DL) at 4.30pm and together with British artists will deliver an artists’ manifesto signed by, amongst others, Tom Stoppard, Eric Fischl and Sam West calling for the immediate release of all detained political prisoners.
The demonstration will follow a press launch of the artists’ manifesto at the Serpentine Gallery.

Belarusian Christmas in London – Каляды ў Лёндане
All members and friends of the Belarusian community in Britain are cordially invited to the traditional Kaliady (Christmas) celebration on Saturday, 17 December, 2 pm.
There will be the traditional, well-loved ‘batlejka’ (Belarusian Christmas puppet show) given by Paval Šaǔcoǔ and Saša Biełavokaja. Saint Nicholas will be giving out presents, so please, if you are coming with children, make sure to have a present prepared for each child and hand it over to Paval before the performance. There will be an occasion to sing Belarusian and English carols.
There is no charge for this event; a collection will be made. All offers of traditional seasonal food and drink – both Belarusian and English – will be gratefully received.
Please note this time the venue is Marian House, on the corner of Holden Avenue and Holden Road (across the road from 39 Holden Rd). Nearest tube station: Woodside Park (Northern Line).
