I just came back from a concert given as part of the 30th anniversary of Solidarity, during which I listened to the Minsk Philharmonic Choir – it made me think of Vera Rich, whom I met 25 years ago.

I am saddened to read of her death but will remember her as a Solidarity supporter, a staunch fighter for the freedom of speech, an inquisitive journalist, a poet and a “Belarusian”

My fondest memory of Vera whist at Macmillan’s was not her writings, but the fact that she willingly joined the netball team and she, along with myself and the other players would walk in our very short skirts – through the Royal Courts of Justice to play in Lincolns Inn Fields. I think Vera enjoyed the ‘anarchy’ of this very much. Vera enjoyed giggling, as did her Mum.

Thank you, Christine! So mane people have said now much Vera infuenced their lives… she was a very kind and encredably bright (also bright in her kindness) person indeed!

I first met Vera’s mother Magdalen when she came to work for me at Macmillan Journals, and through her met Vera who was the Russian correspondent for Nature. Vera and I both attended St Angela’s Providence convent, albeit 20 years apart. Vera was a remarkably knowledgeable woman with a brain the size of a planet. I am saddened to read of her death and will remember her in my prayers. God bless you both Vera and Magdalen.
