Monday 19 March: Centre for the Study of Central Europe at UCL-SSEES invites you to the discussion GRAND DUCHY OF LITHUANIA: COMMON HISTORY, DIVIDED MEMORY, with Professor Norman Davies. The discussion has been instigated by his recently published book “Vanished Kingdoms: The History of Half-Forgotten Europe” (London: Allen Lane, 2011), especially the chapter entitled ‘Litva’. which invites us to reflect on a lesser known part of Europe, its history, legacy and memory. Professor Davies will be joined by two Lithuanian historians, Dr Zenonas Norkus and Dr Gintautas Sliesoriunas, and the Chairman of the Anglo-Belarusian Society, Jim Dingley, in order to reflect on the extraordinary life and troubled afterlife of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The discussion will be moderated by Dr. Richard Butterwick. Following questions from the floor, there will be an opportunity to purchase signed copies of Vanished Kingdoms.

The event is supported by the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania, Lithuanian Institute of History and University College London.

Mr Bruce Bucknell has been appointed Her Majesty’s Ambassador to the Republic of Belarus. He will succeed Ms Rosemary Thomas who will be transferring to another Diplomatic Service appointment. Mr Bucknell will take up his appointment during July 2012. Read more on the Foreign Office website

No doubts that Brian Bennett, a former British ambassador to Belarus, is an extremely intelligent and well-informed diplomat; his speech at the book launch was insightful and interesting to listen to. In his report, the tut.by journalist present at the event highlighted Bennett’s point about the necessity of involving Russia into any possible political changes in Belarus. This is exactly what Belarusians should refuse to even contemplate: both Russia’s involvement in either supporting Lukašenka or toppling him is harmful to the country and nation in a long run. Using Russia as a proxy seems attractive to outsider pragmatists. It is all the same old politics which effectively prevented Belarus from becoming independent during and after the First World War. Bennett obviously is looking for the best achievable solution acceptable to the west, EU and British government in particular. However, such a project would only involve political elites; it would have nothing to do with millions of regular people, with the Belarusians as a people. We, Belarusians, should advocate for a more imaginative western politics, more effective support of the civic society, culture, education, cheaper visas, and easier travel. If Lukašenka to be deposed, it must be done by Belarusians themselves.

У сваім рэпартажы з падзеі журналіст tut.by адзначыў сьцьвярджэньне Бэнэта пра тое, што ўдзел Расеі ў любых магчымых палітычных зьменах у Беларусі пажаданы і нават непазьбежны. Гэта якраз тое, чаго беларусам трэба адкінуць катэгарычна: расейскі ўдзел як у падтрымцы Лукашэнкі, так і яго зьвяржэньні будзе шкодным для краіны і нацыі ў доўгай пэрспэктыве. Зрабіць добрую справу расейскімі рукамі выглядае прывабным для замежных прагматыкаў. Гэта ўсё тая, знаёмая старая палітыка, якая падчас і пасьля Першай сусьветнай вайны не дазволіла Беларусі здабыць незалежнасьць яшчэ тады. Бэнэт, несумненна, шукае асягальны варыянт, прымальны для захаду, Эўразьвязу і брытанскага ўраду ў прыватнасьці. Такі праект, аднак, заангажоўваў бы толькі палітычныя эліты. Мільёны звычайных людзей, беларусы як народ, засталіся б убаку. Нам, беларусам, трэба заклікаць заходнія ўрады да больш стваральнай палітыкі, больш эфэктыўнай падтрымкі грамадзянскай супольнасьці, культуры, адукацыі, да больш танных эўрапейскі візаў і менш бар’ераў для руху паміж Беларусьсю і захадам. Справа пазбаўленьня Лукашэнкі ўлады павінна быць справай саміх беларусаў у першую чаргу.

Next event of the Anglo-Belarusian Society will be a presentation of two newly published books, The Last Dictatorship in Europe: Belarus under Lukashenko by Brian Bennett (UK Ambassador to Belarus, 2004-2007) and Belarus: The Last European Dictatorship by Andrew Wilson (Reader in Ukrainian Studies, School of Slavonic and East European Studies, University College London).

The event will take place in London, at Marian House (corner of Holden Avenue and Holden Road, London N12 8HY, nearest tube station: Woodside Park) on Thursday 26 January, 7pm.

Admission free; a collection will be taken to cover expenses. Refreshments will be served.
