You ask me about the most significant event in my life. The single most significant event happened in October 1953, when I was 17 years old. At that time, I regularly attended the local Catholic church – Christ the King in north London-which was run by Benedictines. At that time, the language of Roman – rite services was still Latin; but one of the monks was very keen that the young people of the parish should understand that ‘Catholic’ did not necessarily mean ‘Latin’. So he organised various events to teach us about other rites. He invited various priests to celebrate liturgy according to their own rites – I remember there was a Syrian, and a priest from the Malankara rite of India. Then, one day, he took a group of us to the Belarusian Catholic Mission, which is also in north London – about 6 km away. I remember being a little disappointed when our priest told us that, although the liturgy was the Byzantine rite, it would be in Old Slavonic, not Greek, because I had learned some Greek at school. However, I thought, whatever language it is in, it will be interesting.
And, indeed, the other young people found it ‘interesting’. But for me, it was the beginning of a new life. When I walked into that beautiful little church I suddenly had a strange feeling that for the first time in my life, I was where I ought to be. I could not get the feeling out of my head, and a few weeks later, I went back again… and again…

Прадметам дасьледваньня сталі бібліятэкі, створаныя групамі імігрантаў з балтыйскіх і славянскіх краінаў, якія імігравалі ў Вялікабрытанію пасьля Другой сусьветнай вайны. Дасьледваньне ахапіла дванаццаць бібліятэкаў у Вялікабрытаніі, створаных шасьцю этнічнымі групамі: беларусамі, латышамі, палякамі, украінцамі, харватамі й эстонцамі. Аналізуюцца заканамернасьці ў стварэньні бібліятэкаў, іх цяперашні стан і ўплыў на іх дзейнасьць дэмакратычных пераўтварэньняў у цэнтральна- і ўсходне-эўрапейскіх краінах. Разглядаецца роля бібліятэкаў у жыцьці імігранцкіх групаў, у стварэньні й разьвіцьці нацыянальнай ідэнтычнасьці.
Робіцца выснова, што з аднаго боку бібліятэкі адлюстроўваюць характар імігранцкіх супольнасьцяў, бо яны былі створаныя і падтрымліваліся людзьмі з падобным досьведам і сьветапоглядам. З другога боку, бібліятэкі маюць пэўную ролю ва ўмацаваньні й разьвіцьці ідэнтычнасьці імігранцкіх супольнасьцяў шляхам дапамогі ў камунікацыі на роднай мове, падтрымкі й пашырэньня каштоўнасьцяў, зразумелых і важных для гэтых групаў, і ўдзелу ў арганізацыйных структурах супольнасьці.
З распадам Савецкага Саюзу сітуацыя канфлікту, якая заахвочвала пасьляваенных імігрантаў да еднасьці і стварэньня актыўных групаў, збольшага зьнікла. Таму будучыня балтыйскіх і славянскіх бібліятэкаў у Вялікабрытаніі будзе залежыць ад іх здольнасьці адаптавацца да новага кантэксту.

One of Baradulin’s poems, written in 1989, is called ‘Za słovam Bykava idu!’ (I follow Bykaŭ’s words!), and the theme of my talk is, indeed, the creative literary friendship between two of Belarus’s most outstanding writers of the last half century: the late Vasil Bykaŭ and Ryhor Baradulin.

Алесь Гарун, які сказаў, што “сам народ – пясняр”, быў бы вельмі рады пабачыць працяг гэтае багатае традыцыі ў дзвюх маладых паэтках, якім я вырашыў прысьвяціць гэты тэкст: Вальжыну Морт, якая цяпер жыве ў Амерыцы, і Віку Трэнас, якая стала часткай вельмі ажыўленай і яркай культуры ў самой Беларусі, – культуры, што, падобна, буяе, нягледзячы на – паводле Шэкспіра, – “удары, каменні, стрэлы яраснага лёсу”. Кожная з гэтых паэтак ужо апублікавала сваю кнігу, а таксама іх вершы зьяўляліся ў розных выданнях. Я б хацеў сёньня параўнаць іх працы, звярнуць увагу на бачаньне імі пэўных тэмаў, а таксама адзначыць некаторыя адрознені, якія выяўляюцца ўжо цяпер, на ранніх стадыях іх творчасці.

St Cyril of Turaŭ [*] is chiefly known for his sermons which earned him the name of a second Chrysostom among the Eastern Slavs. They were not, however, his only literary works; not even his best. Apart from the sermons, the saintly bishop of Turaŭ left us some writings on monastic life as well as many prayers and a few canons. It may be noted that, while in recent times his sermons have attracted the attention of the scholars, in the past it was his spiritual writings, and first of all his prayers, that enjoyed the greater popularity. In his native Belarus in the 16th-17th centuries the prayers of St Cyril were printed in several editions while his sermons continued to spread in manuscript form.

Among the distinguished representatives of the Belarusian national and religious renaissance at the beginning of the 20th century Princess Magdalena Radzivill (1861-1945) by no means occupies the least prominent place. It is unfortunate that her life and work have not until now attracted the attention it deserves of Belarusian historians.

The background of the coat of arms is silver and is divided vertically. In the right part there are three golden lions, the left is divided horizontally. At the top there is the Lamb of God with a red banner, at the bottom there is a running black wild boar. Above the helmet with the Earl’s crown there is a silver hand in armour with a sabre. The casting net is silver with gold. Under the heraldic shield there is a silver ribbon with the motto ‘victoriosus victorieux’, ‘the victor of the victors’ (Lat.) Thus one of the Scandinavian heraldry collections describes the emblem of the O’Rourke family.
