“We call upon the power of art to disturb the sleep of conscience” – The artists manifesto
Join us on December 19th to mark a year a since Lukashenko’s vicious crackdown on dissent and political opposition in Belarus. On this day a year ago around 50,000 Belarusians gathered peacefully to demonstrate against the unfair election. They were met with violent oppression.
Around 2,000 people were arrested and detained en masse in Minsk. There are still 16 political prisoners who are kept under appalling conditions and are routinely tortured. Two of these are presidential candidates Andrei Sannikov and Nicolai Statkevich.
We will gather outside the Belarusian Embassy (6 Kensington Court, Kensington London, W8 5DL) at 4.30pm and together with British artists will deliver an artists’ manifesto signed by, amongst others, Tom Stoppard, Eric Fischl and Sam West calling for the immediate release of all detained political prisoners.
The demonstration will follow a press launch of the artists’ manifesto at the Serpentine Gallery.

Вядомы брытанскі актор Джуд Лоў падпісаў паштоўкі беларускім палітвязням.
Кампанію падтрымкі палітвязняў Беларускі Свабодны тэатр пачаў праводзіць з 5 студзеня 2011 года – свайго першага спектакля, паказанага пасля прэзідэнцкіх выбараў 19 снежня. Тады, у легендарным нью-ёркскім тэатры LaMama, артысты папрасілі амерыканскіх гледачоў падпісаць паштоўкі для палітвязняў, якія ўтрымліваюцца ў беларускіх турмах. З таго часу палітвязням былі адпраўленыя тысячы паштовак з усяго свету – з Нью-Ёрка, Чыкага, Ганконга, Любліна, Лондана, Нотынгема, Турына, Эдынбурга…
У кампанію маральнай падтрымкі палітвязняў ўключыліся дзясяткі сусветных зорак кіно, тэатра, музыкі – Кевін Спейсi, Джуд Лоў, Том Стопард, Кевін Клайн, Лоры Андэрсан, Філіп Сеймур Хофман, Эд Харыс, Джордж Клуні і шматлікія іншыя.
З мая 2011 года ўсе акцыі, арганізаваныя Свабодным тэатрам сталі праходзіць у межах кампаніі Free Belarus Now.
На мінулым тыдні вядомы брытанскі актор Джуд Лоў працягнуў кампанію салідарнасці з палітвязнямі, падпісаўшы і адправіўшы ім усім паштоўкі са словамі падтрымкі.

Minister for Europe David Lidington called on Belarus to release all political prisoners and drop all of the charges against them.
Speaking today the Minister for Europe said:
“I am very worried to hear of the reported ill treatment in detention of ex-presidential candidate Andrei Sannikov and Youth Front Leader Zmitser Dashkevich. Some reports have suggested that they are both experiencing life threatening conditions.
“We call on Belarus to reassure us – as a matter of urgency – that both men are receiving adequate medical treatment and are being treated in accordance with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and of the Body of Principles for the Protection of All Persons under Any Form of Detention or Imprisonment, adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1988; and that their lives are not in danger.
“We again call on Belarus to release all political prisoners and drop all of the charges against them.”
